How to Interview for a Job

An interview is a chance for you to meet the people who are going to be your coworkers, show them that you’re interested in working at their company, and highlight why you would make an excellent addition to their team.

Let’s go over what to expect during an interview!

First, some preparation:

Be curious about the company and its products. You should come into the interview ready to ask thoughtful questions that will demonstrate that you’ve done research on both them and their competitors. If they say something like “we’re one of the biggest software companies in [insert country]” or “our main competitor is [competitor x]”, consider asking:

– What sets us apart from other companies in this industry?

– How did you come up with the idea to start this business/service?

– When was it founded?

– What inspired you to do this kind-of work (enter key words of their main product)?

Practice your answers. If they ask you something like, “What are three positive character traits that make someone successful in this line of work?” or “what’s one thing you want us to know about you that isn’t on your resume?”, think about what answer will demonstrate both confidence and humility . Stay away from clichés!

Do your homework before your interview. Find out as much as possible about the company’s mission, latest projects, and work culture. If there is anything specific you would like to know about the job itself or what they are looking for, ask your contact person beforehand if there is any way they can find out this information for you. Show up knowing why you want this job, what makes you qualified for it, and how long you plan on staying with the company should things go well during the interview process.

Keep your answers short and sweet when answering questions. Listen closely when the interviewer is speaking so that you know what needs to be elaborated on during your response. If you are not sure of an answer, say so and offer to find out later if this is necessary for completing the job requirements. If you need clarification on a question, ask for it.

You may take notes throughout the entire process to reference back at a later time in case questions arise or information gets jumbled in your mind. This can also give off the impression that you care about the job and want to make sure you did everything possible to secure it should things go well. During the interview process, remember to smile and make eye contact. Do not fidget or play around too much unless told otherwise by the interviewer.

Some questions asked include :

Why are you interested in this job?

What were some of your favorite/greatest accomplishments at your previous jobs?

Why should we hire you over all the other applicants?

What do you know about our company? What can you tell me about our mission statement, history, and culture here on out?

You do not necessarily need to know everything there is to know about a company’s history, but it is certainly beneficial for you to have done some research beforehand. It shows that you already care about their success and want to work closely with them every step of the way.

As you can see your interview, make sure to ask the interviewer(s) if there is anything else they would like you to know or clarify about yourself. Thank them for their time and consideration in allowing you the opportunity to meet with them. Good luck!
