Recruiting and Diversification

Companies that improve their diversity tend to be more successful.

When creating your team, you should aim to have your group be more than just a collection of individuals.  Diversity of background and experience bring with them new ideas and ways of looking at things which can result in greater innovation within an organization.

Diversity in the workplace allows companies to embrace different perspectives and ideas. These companies are more likely to see increased profits, increased productivity, increased employee satisfaction, reduced turnover rates, higher degrees of innovation, better customer service… the list goes on.

Figuring out the first steps on how to reach out to employees from diverse backgrounds can be difficult.  Here are just a few that companies can take right now:

  • Advertise open positions in venues with larger diversity pools (affinity groups for under-represented communities).
  • Prepare future leaders who may come from under-represented communities through education and cultivation programs both inside and outside the company (tangible ways to show commitment).
  • Provide special training or mentoring programs for high potential employees from under-represented groups.
  • Ensure that managers have the skill to coach, develop, and retain talented high potentials regardless of their diversity status.
  • Create an environment where all employees are genuinely valued by others both inside and outside the company. Providing opportunities for inclusion is a great way to accomplish this.

The time is now to improve upon the standards of recruiting. Better diversity means a better future for business.
